Hearing Aids

Free Hearing Aid Trial

Hearing loss is one of the fastest growing chronic conditions in Canada. This is in part due to the largest demographic group in the country reaching retirement age. If you think that you or your spouse, parent, or other friend or loved one has hearing loss, it’s a good idea to learn more about it.

Hearing loss, as well as related conditions that can affect your hearing, comes in many forms. There are many types and causes that can affect different people in different ways, including different ways to prevent or treat them.

We wrote these hearing loss guides to give you the basic information you need to get an idea of where to start on your journey to better hearing. The first step is to book a hearing test to find out the exact nature and severity of your hearing loss.

TYPES OF HEARING LOSS

There are three types of hearing loss that you can have and the type depends on where the hearing loss occurs in the ear. In addition, there are other disorders and impairments that are related to hearing loss that can affect your hearing health.

The three main types of hearing loss are sensorineural, conductive and mixed. In general, these types are also characterized by what is causing the hearing loss. It can be due to damage to your auditory nerves, or any blockage or damage that prevents sound from making it to the parts of your ear that pick up the sound.

You can learn more in our guide to the types of hearing loss.

Tinnitus

Tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, can be caused by many things and is a sign of an underlying health condition. It is one of the most common hearing disorders due to the many different causes and sources. The sound in the ear may be present all of the time, or it may come and go throughout your life. Tinnitus tests can be done, though it should be understood that not all tinnitus can be eliminated or reduced.

If you want to know more about the symptoms, causes or treatments of tinnitus, you can read them in our tinnitus guide here.

HEARING LOSS SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

The signs and symptoms of hearing loss can be sudden or can develop slowly over time. It is often family members that are the ones that first notice a person’s hearing loss. Some of the signs can include: asking others to repeat themselves, turning up the volume on the TV or radio to loud levels, and more.

You may also exhibit secondary symptoms, such as ear pain, infections, pressure, dizziness, and so on. You can learn more in our guide to hearing loss signs and symptoms.

WHAT CAUSES HEARING LOSS AND HOW TO PREVENT IT

Hearing loss can be caused by many things in your life and environment, including exposure to loud noises, diabetes and other illnesses or health conditions, different medications, genetics, and more.

However, in general age-related hearing loss and noise-induced hearing loss are the most common causes and there are things you can to do help prevent hearing loss. Some of the most common causes of hearing loss can be prevented by wearing custom ear protection or limiting our amount of exposure to the dangers.
